STICKLEY HOUSE Vintage Design for the Modern Rustic Home
Russel Wright helped create the concept of the industrial designer, unlike most industrial designers of his age, however, Wright basically designed for the home. He also brought his special talents to bear on the relationship between design and natural settings. His passion for the outdoors was an ideal fit for the Old Hickory Furniture Company who commissioned Wright to create his vision for a Wright branded furniture line. Wright worked with OHF and introduced the original collection of Modern Rustic furnishings in1939.
Russel Wright was an unusual combination of an American craftsman, industrial designer, and naturalist. An independent thinker, Wright was a craftsman at heart who wanted to make household pieces that were beautiful, useful, reasonably priced, and available to everybody.
By the 1950s he was beginning to create an ecologically sensitive woodland garden on his estate, Manitoga, in Garrison, N.Y. During the 1960s he became a consultant to the National Park Service and focused on bringing people into the parks to enjoy nature.
The 1939 Old Hickory catalogue offers The American Provincial line of furniture in chestnut and pine. They also title their new line "Rustic Modern".
